Summary

In this EU3D report, Magdalena Góra, Elodie Thevenin and Katarzyna Zielińska (eds) and a group of researchers from partner institutions examine the debate on the future of Europe within the European Union (EU) by studying 11 national parliaments and the European Parliament from 2015 to 2021. Their analysis demonstrates three key developments. Firstly, the national debates on the future of Europe seldom focus on the polity aspects of the reforms of European integration and often lack coherent integration visions from partisan actors. Secondly, these debates are primarily shaped by local constituency-driven concerns, influenced by crises and domestic political conflicts. Thirdly, apart from typical ways of narrating the future of Europe in terms of intergovernmental or federal visions, a prominent sovereignist narrative, combining former Euro-reject positions with strong Euroscepticism, is gaining traction across the contexts studied.
